CHAPTER EIGHT

PENNY STOOD IN her bathroom. Her hair was tangled, and she sagged against the sink as she brushed her teeth. Her skin was pale.

Soleil positioned Kemuel next to Penny’s ear. “I want you to close your eyes and listen.”

Doubt and suspicion clouded Kemuel’s blue eyes. “Listen?”

Soleil grinned. “Yes.”

Kemuel regarded her a moment longer before closing his eyes.

“All right.” Soleil moved behind him and placed her hands on his shoulders. Muscles rippled beneath her fingers, and warmth radiated off him. She moved closer. Briefly, she entertained the thought of resting her cheek against him, but she screwed up her face and focused. “Penny knows she isn’t too sick. The cold is just starting to come on. She doesn’t think it’s bad enough for her to go see a doctor.”

“Yes. I hear that,” Kemuel stated flatly. He tried to face Soleil, but she stopped him. A muscle in his jaw twitched. Before he could speak, she continued in an even tone.

“Those are her conscious thoughts. Mortals are more than that. The conscious part of their brain is active while they are awake, but their subconscious is active all the time. It is constantly aware of every detail about the mortal and stores it to compare for later. You want to feel for her subconscious thoughts. What do they tell you?”

“The same,” Kemuel said after a split-second pause. “That she can push through this illness.”

“No,” Soleil chided. “You didn’t even try to listen.”

Kemuel’s body tensed. He clenched his fists. “Do not assume—”

“It’s not an assumption when it’s the truth,” Soleil cut him off. “You barely took the time it’d take to hear her subconscious. It doesn’t come as easy as her conscious thoughts.”

Kemuel opened his mouth, but nothing came out. Frustration flashed across his face. He huffed. “Fine.” He closed his eyes. Seconds ticked by in silence, but underneath the silence existed a whisper.

Soleil held her breath, silently urging him to listen to that voice.

He cocked his head. “Interesting.”

Excitement beat through Soleil. She bounced. “What do you hear?”

“The mortal’s subconscious—”

“Penny. You’ll connect better if you use her name.”

Kemuel grumbled but continued. “Penny’s subconscious has been aware of the virus in her system for some time. It has noted stories in the news of mortals with symptoms similar to hers.” He paused to listen more. His eyebrows rose. “Those mortals were hospitalized. This is not a sickness to ignore.” He looked at Soleil with his mouth hanging open.

She beamed at him. “You see?”

Kemuel rubbed his chin. “The mort—” He stopped short. “Penny,” he corrected, “should go to a healer.”

A giggle burst free from Soleil at his choice of words. He was too cute. Like an old-fashioned angel thrust into modern times.

The suspicion returned to his face. “Why do you laugh?”

Soleil blushed and ducked her head. “Sorry.” She straightened up, wiped her grin away, and clasped her hands behind her back. “You’re right. Penny should go to the doctor, but since she doesn’t feel too sick, she will resist.”

Penny trudged back to her bedroom and sat on the edge of her bed.
